Every generation has a teen it girl working in SoHo

Plus the Directioner's guide to England and Ireland

Happy Thursday, Yappers. Two small corrections from Monday’s newsletter:

  • Britney Spears did not adopt a girl, per Rolling Stone. Although, I still would love to know what she meant by her original post…

  • FKA Twigs announced a new song, not an album. I got so mystified by her choice of phrasing in her announcement of “Perfectly” that I forgot that I literally went to a EUSEXUA DELUXE listening event and heard this song 🤦🏻‍♀️

In today’s newsletter, nothing beats Jet2 holiday variants, hangout TV, an affair exposed at a Coldplay concert, EDM in pop is back, and more.

A fun treat: Lady Gaga added “Summerboy” back to the set list after nearly two decades. “Summerboy” is a great song to drive to BTW — listen to it along with other jams on Yap Year’s DRIVE playlist <3

Gen Alpha has TikTokers who work at Brandy, Gen Z had Tumblr girls who worked at American Apparel

New York teen girls will always set the tone for what’s cool. I loved this mini profile from The Cut about Allegra Pinkowitz, a 17-year-old TikToker that got hired at Brandy Melville and has become somewhat of an idol to tweens online. People line up to see her fold clothes at the SoHo Brandy!

Every generation must have their it girls, and Pinkowitz reminds me of the ones I had on my vision board as a teen on Tumblr: New York girls who were the chosen few who had the “look” to work for the trendiest store in SoHo. For elder Gen Z, we had Barbie Ferreira, whose American Apparel ads went triple platinum on Tumblr.

A generation’s “it girls” can tell you a lot about what is en vogue. Back then, grungy and so-called indie sleaze aesthetics were all the rage among teens. Now, “preppy” and clean girl styles are still the trend among emerging teens — which is more or less what you would see at a Brandy Melville.
